The Yenisey RiverExpedition

Thanks to Colin again !

The first ever descent, from source to sea, of the 5540 kilometre Yenisey River, set against a backdrop of fairytale cultures and forbidding wilderness.

The Yenisey River is born in the heart of Mongolia and flows north, through Siberia, and on the the Arctic Ocean. It is the fifth longest river on the planet , and at the arrival of the new millennium no one had ever navigated its entirety.

Colin, along with his adventuring friends, Ben Kozel, Remy Quinter and Tim Cope, endeavored to be the first to run the Yenisey. The 5,540 km river is frozen for more than half the year, so the small team would have just a five month window to accomplish this feat.

Dramatic footage captures their successful journey and provides an intimate perspective of a frozen nation emerging from the collapse of communism.

Beyond The Horizon

Thanks to Colin we have received 2 fantastic movies today !
SUPER INSPIRING !

Colin Angus and his wife-to-be, Julie Wafaei, circle the world in a 43,000 km journey by rowboat, bicycle, foot and ski, completing what Outside Magazine and many others have called "one of the last great expeditions" - the first human powered circumnavigation.

In June 2004, the Canadian team left from Vancouver on a two year odyssey that included rowing across 2 oceans, trekking over 3 continents, and exploring 17 countries. They managed the first rowboat crossing of the Bering Sea, travelled through the coldest lands outside of Antarctica, and trekked alongside Nomadic reindeer herders.

For 5 months they rowed unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean, enduring 4 cyclones during the worst hurricane season in recorded history, to complete their 10,000 km ocean crossing, making Julie the first woman to row across the Atlantic from mainland to mainland and the first Canadian woman to row across any ocean.

The Asgard Project

Thanks to Al Lee we have The Asgard Project !

The film follows Leo's ambitious project to make a first free ascent on the North Tower of the incredible Mt Asgard on Baffin Island deep in the Arctic. Leo teams up with fellow big wall climbing god, Stanley Leary (USA), the duo hope to make a wingsuit descent from the summit. Arriving late in the season the trip soon begins to go wrong, after a spectacular arrival skydiving over Mt Asgard, conditions turn against the team where just reaching the base of the climb becomes a massive challenge.

The film produced by multi-award winner, Alastair Lee, is an all out spectacular documenting a truly cutting edge adventure with all its twists and turns.

Olivier Higgins and Mélanie Carrier chose a journey, but most would call it a long adventure, approximately 8000 kilometers long. Riding their bicycles through Asia. Along the way, they discover the world, but over all, they discover themselves. Who are they? What is their place in this world? Do we not all have a common "azimuth"?

FILMS

Films to be shown on DIAFF 2011

E11
UK, 2006, 41 min
Directed by Paul Diffley, Produced by Dave Brown
E11 tells the story behind the first ascent of Rhapsody, a route considered to be the hardest tradition rock climb in the world. Told in an off beat dramadoc style the film attempts to understand what it takes to climb a route of this standard. E11 strives to get inside the head of its first ascensionist, the understated yet quite remarkable Dave MacLeod. Oh yeah, itÂ’s also packed full of ankle smashing, gear ripping, monster falls! TRAILER

ASIEMUT
Canada, 2006, 56 min
Directed by Olivier Higgins & Mélanie Carrier, Produced by IDEM
Asiemut, was this crazy idea to ride more than 8000 km by bike across Asia, from Mongolia to the Ganga plains in India. Passionate by video making and conscious of its great potential to communicate, we wanted to make a movie that would have our spectators reflect throughout a simplistic adventure, an adventure involving nomadic occidentals whom share their feelings, thoughts and values. Motosyberia - Maciek Swiniarski (PL) - 60 min
Maciek Swinarski is, arguably, the greatest adventure film-maker in the world today. His latest film has made him a household name in his native Poland, and now you can discover the man who is fast becoming a legend! Unlike similar films made by British crews, Swinarski fully engages with the local people as he crosses the vast Russian landmass on his motorcycle. He full shares this amazing experience not only with the viewer, but also with the people he meets. This is the antidote to the to the contrived 'reality' TV which dominates screens today - this is real back to basic stuff, real life action, with all the hardship and adventure that entails. This is the story of one man's journey from Poland to Magadan.
